Rich: On a whim, I Googled you. And, lo and behold, I found your Project 18 reference. I am a Project 18 product from 1978. I'm sure you remember me as a dedicated open classroom student - maybe a bit on the rambunctious side! I ultimately graduated in Journalism from Penn State, became a daily newspaper reporter/editor, marketing agency owner and now a Sr. V.P., Marketing and Corporate Development, for a large non-profit organization in Boca Raton, Florida. Project 18 was a phenomenal educational (and life) experience. We engaged in open discussions and study on current issues and visited the state capitol. I completed a research project aimed at establishing an environmental awareness center at HAHS, travelling to other schools and putting together a comprehensive plan. Rich: Thanks and thank goodness you are still a dedicated "civic" servant! email me if you can: andrewrose@bellsouth.net

Profile Information

Who are you?
I am an educator. Whether teaching Project 18 at Hempfield Area Senior High, in my capacity as Communication Director for a State Senator, teaching at Seton Hill University or being the SW Pa. PennCORD coordinator, my objective is to enhance civic education and responsibility. I am a pragmatist who seeks result. In that respect, I want PennCORD to be the "go to" organization for teachers throughout the state.
What is your affiliation with PennCORD?
Southwest Pa. PennCORD coordinator
Where are you from in PA?
Greensburg, PA.

Tell more about the the Project 18 course that you speak about.

It is an elective course taught at Hempfield Senior High in Westmoreland County. It is considered by many to be one of the best civic education courses in Pennsylvania. The subject matter for the 12th grade elective is state and local government, leadership training, and politics. The central philosophy of the course is to build a knowledge base for the students. The student are then placed in real life activities in which they develop confidence, get an understand the dynamics of government, and ultimately increase their odds of being successful advocates.

Since only supplementary books are used for the class, it has been difficult to transfer this course to other schools. To remedy that, a comprehensive teacher's manual is now being written.
