Chichester HS has created a student organization called the Chichester Students for Civic Involvement, CSCI, which has been heavily involved in civic activities in the Chichester school district as well as the community of Chichester. CSCI is a group of underclassmen who want to help others gain a better understanding of civics and appreciation of civic involvement. The central idea of CSCI is learning through activities, such as mock elections, tutoring, community service, service learning projects and also providing a sounding board on political issues.
CSCI students attended school board meetings and reported on the efforts of the school district and the teachers to reach an agreement on a new contract; staffed the tables for the “I signed the Constitution” Day where Chichester students signed the Constitution. CSCI also provided voter registration information / forms for students who were not registered to vote and volunteered to work the polls during recent local elections and the Pennsylvania primary.
With their newly minted CSCI T-shirts members of CSCI helped to run a mock primary, which was won by Senators Obama and McCain using a real voting booth. In November they plan to orchestrate a mock election for POTUS, President of the United States. They also rode a float at Chichester High's Homecoming parade.
The CSCI, advised by Brett Assise, has decided to become more active in advocating for students and their community as a whole. They are truly representative of what we believe our mission at PennCORD is: to build a solid foundation of civic knowledge for Pennsylvania students; to engage students in public action; and to teach them the skills of democratic deliberation, thereby enabling them to become active participants in their communities, society and government.
